Marking & FAQ — Baseball Fields
From high school through the major leagues the infield is identical: 90-ft base paths and a pitching rubber 60 ft 6 in. from the back point of home plate, on a mound raised 10 in. above the field. Only the outfield fence distance varies by park.
Youth baseball scales the whole diamond down. Little League Majors (ages 9-12) uses 60-ft bases and a 46-ft pitching distance with a flat-ish mound, then the Intermediate (50/70) and Junior/Senior (60/90) divisions step up toward the full field.
How to lay out a baseball infield
The infield is a square turned on its point. Get home plate and the 90-ft diagonal right and the rest follows.
You'll need: 200-ft tape measure · Two shorter tapes · Chalk or marking paint · Base anchors and a pitching rubber
- Set home plate. Place the back point of home plate. All measurements start from here.
- Run the foul lines. Stretch lines from home through where first and third base will sit, 90 ft along each (HS / college / MLB; 60 ft for Little League Majors).
- Locate second base. Second base is on the line straight out from home. Home to second is 127 ft 3⅜ in. on a 90-ft diamond (84 ft 10¼ in. on a 60-ft diamond). Where the two 90-ft swings from first and third intersect is second base.
- Set the pitching rubber. Measure 60 ft 6 in. from the back point of home along the home-to-second line (46 ft for Little League Majors). Center the rubber there.
- Build the mound. The mound is an 18-ft-diameter circle (MLB) with the rubber 10 in. above home-plate level, sloping down 1 in. per foot starting 6 in. in front of the rubber.
